There’s the dirty martini. The chocolate martini. And then my favorite: The Zootini. It comes with a dazzle – the collective noun for Zebras – on the side.
The Zootini is part alcohol mixed with a whole lot of fun. You can only enjoy it while walking through the Peoria Zoo May 11 from 6 to 9 p.m.
Zootini is actually the name of a fundraising event put on by Peoria Zoological Society. The staff recruits business and bars to bring in their best martinis and compete for votes. Delicious food is available from Barrack’s. The event is held in the Africa Exhibit, giving participants a very unique locale for enjoying friends and a cocktail.
Now in its 8th year, Zootini is a very popular fundraiser in the community. The event always sells out, and you can’t buy tickets at the door, so I encourage anyone who wants to attend to purchase their tickets now on the Peoria Zoo website. Tickets are $60 each and allow you to sample a selection of martinis. You can purchase additional drinks and raffle tickets at the event.
This is INB’s third year as a Zootini sponsor. It’s great to be able to support an activity that’s fun for the adults, yet means more fun for the kids because the money the event generates goes right into the zoo. The zoo, formerly known as the Glen Oak Zoo, is operated by the Peoria Park District. The 15 acres include an Asian Trail and Australia Walk-about.
Last year I served on the Zootini planning committee, but I didn’t feel I was able to give it my all as spring is an especially busy time for mortgage lenders. But I plan to take the night of May 11 off so I can roam the grounds with the animals and vote for my favorite drink.
