Have you ever told your kids, “If you don’t wear your seat belt, the cops will come get you”? I know I have. So when I read that this seemingly innocent tactic to get our children to behave inadvertently paints a negative portrayal of law enforcement officers, I decided to stop.
Instead, I’ve been thinking how important it is for children to learn that our emergency responders and local police officers are regular people like you and me. Maybe a little “cooler” considering they get to wear uniforms.
In saying that, I’m excited to announce plans to have a Sangamon County sheriff deputy at our South 6th Street Branch “Play it Safe with Your Kids” day Tuesday, July 26. This is a chance to show kids how “cool” peace officers really are! It’s a chance to see how sheriff deputies HELP, PROTECT, and SERVE our community. As a bonus, you and your children can take a peek inside an officer’s car! The deputy who joins us July 26 may even let you run the lights and sirens!
The deputy will take questions from the kids, so ask your children to come up with some questions so they can learn what our deputies do each day and how they help our community.
In additional to a presence from the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office, we’ve invited the Springfield Fire Department and the firefighters plan to bring a fire truck.
I hope you’ll join us for our “Play it Safe” with Your Kids event. Other activities include:
- Register for a chance to win prizes.
- Spin the prize wheel for a chance to win Sliders tickets for the last game of the regular season.
- Take your kid’s photo with a Fire Dog Safety Pup.
Time: 4 – 6:30 p.m.
Date: Tuesday July 26
Place: INB South Sixth Street location; 2849 South 6th St.
